Vasari's House
It is situated in via XX Settembre. It was bought by Vasari between 1540-48; he completed its construction and took care of its decoration, with the help of some collaborators. He spent very short time there because he used to travel a lot between Florence, Rome and other cities.
Today it houses the Museum dedicated to Giorgio Vasari, where XVI century works of later Mannerism made above all by Tuscan artists are preserved. And more than this, in the annexe Archives there are autograph letters by Michelangelo. The original facade was smaller than the present one, which is in fact the result of later widening works. Walking through the rooms of the main floor we can sec the wonderful fresco decorations, named after their themes.
The “Sala della Fama e delle Arti”: to the centre of the vault the representation of Fame, sitting on the Earth globe. To her sides the Four Arts ( Painting, Sculpture, Poetry, Architecture); in the lunettes seven ovals showing the portraits of artists from Arezzo or artists who worked in town. On the window the image of a putto who holds the blazon of the Vasari Family.
The “Sala di Apollo e delle Muse”: to the centre of its arched ceiling we can see an oval depicting Apollo encircled by the Nine Muses.
The “Sala di Abramo”: once used as a wedding room, it has a lacunars ceiling with an oval portraying God who blesses the seed of Abramo and four rectangles depicting Peace. Harmony, Modesty and Virtue.
The “Sala del Camino”: it is the reception room of the house. On the walls there are frescoes showing the deeds of ancient painters; it has got a lacunars ceiling, painted a tempera and in oils. To its centre Fame beating Fortune and Envy, and around this the four Life Seasons and the Planets.
